Service Description

To participate in this workshop you must have a current, regular yoga practice which involves attending at least 2 classes per week. Inversions are a vital part of our yoga practice, with their’ benefits experienced physically, mentally and emotionally. They strengthen and tone the spine and the nervous system. They invigorate and focus the mind, as well as support and regulate the hormonal and emotional system. Salamba sirsasana – (head stand) is considered the king or father of asana. Salamba sarvangasana – (shoulder stand) the queen or mother of asana. They are invaluable in our practice of yoga. What will be taught; * Explore how your regular yoga practice prepares you for inversions. * Learn correct alignment in inversions. * Actions required for inversions, broken down into achievable workable components. * Learn modified versions of inversions to reap their’ benefits. * Always working within your own capacities. * Understand a pathway forward into the full pose Specific inversions we will be exploring - * Viparita karani – inverted lake pose or waterfall pose * Pincha mayurasana – peacock pose or forearm balance * Adho mukha vrkasana – handstand * Salamba sarvangasana – supported all limb pose or shoulder stand * Salamba sirsasana – head stand. Iyengar yoga offers a detailed, safe, and methodical way into inversions, by teaching correct alignment first. Its’ prop usage makes the inversions achievable and allows everyone to experience the benefits of the inversions no matter what level your practice is at. From here it shines a light on the pathway forward, and into the full asana. Karen has practiced and studied Iyengar yoga for approximately 20 years. She has studied under some of the most highly trained Iyengar teachers in Australia. She recently returned from her second trip to India where she again studied directly with the Iyengar family in Pune. **Please note, whilst there are alternative asanas offered, inversions are not appropriate whilst menstruating.** **Inversions are contraindicated if you suffer from glaucoma, cataracts, have a migraine or are recovering from any kind of shoulder or neck surgery.** If you suffer from any of the above conditions please contact Samana yoga before enrolling in this workshop.
